EDINBURGH, U.K. - Hilton Edinburgh Airport is the first hotel in Scotland to have been awarded the prestigious Investors in Young People Accreditation, the only people management standard that focuses on an employer's recruitment and retention of young people.

Launched in July 2014, Investors in Young People originated through a key recommendation from the Commission for Developing Scotland's Young Workforce, led by Sir Ian Wood. The accreditation is offered to all businesses across Scotland and exists to recognise and support organisations across Scotland in the employment of young people.

Commenting on the award, Aileen Fraser, cluster director, human resources, Scotland, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, said, "We pride ourselves on recruiting and investing heavily in the talent development of our young team members and are honoured to have received this accreditation.

"All of our team members work extremely hard and show real dedication to their roles. The management team at the hotel understands the long-term benefits of committing time to their younger team members and supporting them in making the most of the development opportunities available to help them progress their careers."

Stuart Cran, general manager, Hilton Edinburgh Airport, said, "The hospitality industry offers a career path for young people from various backgrounds, including those who went straight into the workforce from school and others who pursued a university education.

"Our Human Resources Officer, Natalie Laing, has worked hard to recruit a diverse team of young people who have been integrated into every department throughout the hotel. We have developed a culture that encourages team members to support each other through their learning and development, which has resulted in a very positive workplace where young people have really thrived."

Hilton Edinburgh Airport recruits young people in the local area through partnerships with schools and colleges and work experience placements. Around 45 percent of the hotel's employees are under the age of 30.

Calum Manekshaw, 27 years old, deputy manager, Hilton Edinburgh Airport, said, "Before I started my career with Hilton as a bar manager seven years ago, I was used to working with small, family-run hotels and never expected that I would one day work for such a global company. Several years on, I can say that I haven't looked back.

"Hilton is a company that is committed to the wellbeing and development of its team members. They involve employees in decision making and really listen to what people have to say. The company also provides training opportunities to help team members improve their strengths and development areas and really encourage everyone to take pride and do their best within their role.

"Hospitality is a fantastic industry for young people to consider as a career with so many different roles available. It can be hugely rewarding and if you're willing to work hard, have the right attitude and want to learn, then there's the opportunity to work through the ranks quickly."

Fraser said, "When being assessed for the award, we were told that many of our team members described their experience of working at the hotel like being a member of the family, which is good to hear and highlights that we have the right culture in our business, driven from the top by the hotel's General Manager Stuart Cran. Our Investors in Young People plaque will soon take a place of pride in the hotel!"

Peter Russian, chief executive, Investors in People Scotland, said, "This is a fantastic achievement for Hilton Edinburgh Airport, and the whole IIYP team would like to wholeheartedly congratulate them. The Investors in Young People framework not only recognises and supports organisations in the employment of young people, but marks them out as an employer of choice. I envisage that many more organisations will wish to follow in the footsteps of Hilton Edinburgh Airport and demonstrate their commitment to young people by working with the Investors in Young People framework.

"The benefits of recruiting and developing young people are countless. These include the creation of a talent pool for the future, new and increased skills in areas such as IT and social media, fresh eyes and mind-sets into business operations along with enthusiasm and unique talents."
