MCLEAN, Va. -  Last week Hilton Hotels & Resorts achieved another industry first as we became the first hotel brand to pass 50,000 fans on Facebook. In the social media space, quality always trumps quantity, but nonetheless, this particular milestone speaks to the growing power of social media to engage our guests and tell the Hilton story.

Since August 2009, we've chosen to organically grow our presence on Facebook and Twitter. Rather than enticing users with a flood of giveaways, our tactics have focused on reaching users who find engagement with Hilton to be relevant and generating an authentic conversation about our brand and its hotels and resorts around the world. As a result, Hilton not only became the "most liked" brand on Facebook, but also achieved high scores from various third parties for its level of engagement through both Facebook and Twitter.

Telling the Hilton brand story will always be the core of this joint effort between our global public relations and online marketing teams. Our story is a compelling one that is told through a variety of ways - from the partnerships we engage locally and globally to the promotions and benefits we provide our guests to our community programs, strategic initiatives and the work of our Team Members who care for thousands of guests each day around the world. The social media platform gives us opportunities to bring our guests inside Hilton and share those stories that may not find their way into media headlines.

Of course much of our story is told by our passionate Hilton guests; the countless people who check into our more than 530 properties, and share their experiences with us.
