ODAWARA, Japan - "The Tiger Mask" phenomenon of anonymous gift-giving is a series of donations of school backpacks and other items to orphanages around Japan. "Tiger Mask" is the name of a cartoon hero, popular in 1960s and 70s and it is about a wrestler who fought for orphans, having been raised in an orphanage himself.

The Orphanage in Odawara city, "Yurikago-en," received a letter and a financial donation from someone calling himself the Tiger Mask this February with a special request. Further to this, The orphanage requested that Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa, which has been supporting various local charity activities, complete a secret mission.

The letter from the mysterious donor says, "I have read a story about a Michelin starred restaurant Chef, who regularly invites orphans to his restaurant, offering first-class food and service to children, hoping that someday, some of these less fortunate children might wish to become a Chef." He empathized with this story and continued, "so, rather than school backpacks, I enclosed money for your children to experience first-class food and service."

Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa has been chosen as a partner to deliver a luxury hotel experience to their little guests. Two dinners were arranged at Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa, inviting 55 children from the orphanage "Yurikago-en." The hotel’s culinary and service team had meetings after meetings to deliver unforgettable memories to the children. Children aged 4 to 10 were invited to the diner buffet on Feb. 28 and enjoyed more than 30 kinds of superb hotel specialties and desserts, including ‘Chocolate fountain’; rich-tasting flows of liquid chocolate.

In addition, our award winning bartender conducted a Kid’s Cocktail performance right in front of the children to create custom-made cocktails. On March 8, older children over 11-years-old experienced a multi-course French dinner, prepared by the Executive Chef Mizuguchi and his team. The children enjoyed the delicious dishes, while being enchanted by the sophisticated service of the banquet team.

Dinner on March 8 also included a table etiquette course by the F&B Manager, a cocktail performance by the beverage team, and the party concluded with words from Executive Chef Mizuguchi, about his passion for haute cuisine. We hope that the memory of these evenings will remain in the children’s heart and someday, and we hope to welcome them back as guests or, who knows, as part of the Hilton family.
