HOUSTON -  Houston’s largest hotel, Hilton Americas-Houston, having received the unique distinction of becoming the first hotel in the state of Texas to achieve Green Seal certification, has now gone even greener with its conversion to biodiesel as an alternative, environmentally-friendly fuel.

Demonstrating environmental leadership in operations and purchasing, the downtown Houston convention hotel reduced their environmental impact and improved sustainability in accordance with stringent guidelines set out by Green Seal in order to obtain the coveted certification confirming that the hotel complies with the environmental and performance requirements of the Green Seal Environmental Standard for Lodging Properties – Silver level.

Taking their environmental commitment to an even higher level, Hilton Americas-Houston took delivery of its first load of biodiesel in July 2009, to further reduce the hotel’s overall carbon footprint through environmentally sensitive purchasing and use of alternative fuel sources.

Biodiesel, a non-toxic and biodegradable energy source, is a clean-burning alternative to petroleum diesel made from renewable domestic resources such as plant oils, animal fats and recycled grease and kitchen oil. Agrifuels such as biodiesel perform essentially the same as petroleum-based diesel, with one major difference - biodiesel significantly reduces harmful hydrocarbon emissions and greenhouse gases, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by as much a 78 percent as compared to petroleum diesel.

One of the fastest growing alternative fuels, biodiesel is currently replacing tens of millions of barrels of petroleum products, adding approximately $4 billion to the US economy in just the past year. The fuel’s contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in just one year was the equivalent of removing 700,000 passenger vehicles from America's roadways. In addition to its environmental benefits, the 500 million gallons of biodiesel produced in 2007 offset nearly 12 million barrels of oil, with production scheduled to ramp-up with each year.

In the past 12 months, 14,000 pounds of kitchen oil have been recycled by Hilton Americas-Houston, totaling seven tons of oil-based food waste that were diverted from the landfill to be repurposed through eventual conversion into biofuels. The hotel’s commitment to recycling and composting, in combination with its switch to biodiesel, even further lessens its impact on the environment and strengthens its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Here are just some of the many ongoing green initiatives in effect at Hilton Americas-Houston to reduce the hotel’s environmental impact as a Green Seal certified property:
