Hotel Introduces Complimentary Green Campaigns

BIRMINGHAM, UK -  In the West Midlands, Hilton Birmingham Metropole is an exemplary example of a hotel taking environmental issues seriously. In addition to installing new energy efficient technology, the hotel is recruiting its team members to get involved in the group’s carbon management programme by setting up a green committee to manage energy efficiency campaigns such as the ‘Office switch Off’ and ‘Green Chef’. 

The ‘Green Chef’ campaign encourages staff to think about energy efficiency in the hotel’s kitchen and how to create a ‘low carbon diet’ by using equipment at optimum efficiency and introducing environmentally friendly ways of cooking.  The hotel also encourages involvement in the ‘Office Switch off’ campaign which aims to slash energy bills by getting team members to think about how and when they use energy in the hotel.

The Carbon Trust Standard is the world’s first carbon award that requires an organisation to measure, manage and reduce its carbon footprint and actually make real reductions year-on-year. Unlike other award schemes, organisations are rewarded for actions they’ve taken to cut carbon across their own operations.

With the British Government’s Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) just around the corner, the Standard accreditation will help Hilton maximise the benefits of the new legislation, and gain a competitive advantage over other businesses in the hospitality sector. The CRC will place UK businesses in a carbon league table, which will result in financial rewards for high performers and financial penalties for those who fail to reduce their energy consumption.  The Carbon Trust Standard is an early action metric for the CRC, with those who achieve the award being placed higher in the league table.

This is the latest in Hilton’s efforts to improve its sustainability performance and cut unnecessary energy costs, having recently re-launched its corporate identity as Hilton Worldwide with a new mission, vision and values. The company, which has more than 80 hotels in the UK, has worked in partnership with the Carbon Trust since 2005 to develop and implement an ongoing carbon management programme. 

As part of the Carbon Management programme, Hilton has implemented a number of energy efficiency measures across its hotels including installing CHP units to generate onsite electricity, introducing a sustainability reporting system, upgrading lighting systems, introducing voltage optimisation on main electrical switchgear, carrying out regular audits on thermal insulation systems and optimisation of their Building Management Systems (BMS) to ensure all equipment is running at the highest efficiencies possible.

Employee engagement has played a big part in its success and the hotel group encourages its team members to help save energy by identifying energy champions in each of its hotels and offering green incentives to team members. This year all hotels are participating in an energy league table with mountain bikes being awarded to the winning hotel. This all contributes towards Hilton’s goal of reducing its carbon emissions by 20% by 2014 - as part of the company’s global sustainability targets.
