Hilton Chicago Receives ‘Star Of The Industry’ Environmental Award

Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association Recognizes Hotel For Its Sustainability-Focused Culture

CHICAGO -  Hilton Chicago received the 2009 Star of the Industry Award in Good Earthkeeping from the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association (IH&LA) for its continued environmental efforts.

The Good Earthkeeping Award recognizes lodging properties that have developed a culture toward integrating superior environmental management practices that improve everyday operations while maintaining quality service and meeting guest expectations. Hilton Chicago is committed to the accomplishment in achieving superior environmental success in the following areas: recycling, energy and water conservation, solid waste reduction, effluents and emissions, purchasing, and business issues. To realize this goal, a ‘green’ committee was formed which is made up of 15 hotel team members from various departments dedicated to this cause.

In 2009, the hotel diverted 167 tons of recyclables from landfills, including paper/cardboard, glass, plastics/metals, and miscellaneous items such as batteries and fluorescent bulbs. Motion detectors, automatic faucets, and automatic paper towel dispensers were installed in all public spaces to minimize waste. Also, the ‘green’ committee planted a rooftop garden which supplies fresh herbs (oregano, basil, thyme, chives, sage and parsley) as well as vegetables (tomatoes and cucumbers) to the kitchen for use in meal preparation. “We are honored to receive this award,” Hilton Chicago General Manager John Wells stated. “I am extremely proud of our green team members as they continually strive to integrate more ‘green’ practices into improving hotel operations, minimizing our impact on the environment, and serving our guests. This is a very important initiative for us and I’m looking forward to the ideas the green team will formulate and nurture this year.”
