COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -  Hilton Colombo celebrated Christmas in a grand way to raise funds for The Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind, now called The Institute for the Hearing & Sight Impaired. The magnificent display of beautifully wrapped gift boxes gave the hotel a very different look this time along with the most unique and exquisite display of “Santas from around the world”. The lobby showcased Santas representing more than 50 countries in different, colorful yet traditional costumes. The famous pyramid which was filled with various items since Easter last year was filled with these Santas which was on sale to raise funds for the Ceylon School for the Deaf & Blind, Ratmalana. The hotel collected a total amount of US$ 2783 for this worthy cause.

The unveiling of this giant pyramid was spectacular. There were 400 guests and friends from the media to witness it. This event was collaborated with the annual Yuletide Cocktails and guests enjoyed the good food and good wine that was flowing all evening. The Santas were dressed in different costumes representing different countries which gave the hotel’s lobby a very colorful atmosphere. The highlight of the event was of course when the children from the School of the Deaf & Blind sang Christmas carols and all guests joined them creating a true Christmas spirit at the Hilton Colombo!

The Institute for the Hearing & Sight Impaired is both a school and a home to six hundred students who are either hearing or sight impaired. The Institute looks after these special people providing them with accommodation, food and education. Apart from being taught the National Curriculum up to the G.C.E. O/L standard, they are also taught a vocation that will help them find employment when they leave the shelter of the Institute. The Institute runs three residential schools, two at Ratmalana (about 15 km from Colombo) and a third at Jaffna in the northern tip of the island. Each school provides accommodation for about 200 students. The two schools at Ratmalana are the School for the Sight Impaired and the School for the Hearing Impaired. The Nuffield School in Jaffna caters to both types of impairments.

The transformation that the School is able to bring about in these children is truly amazing. At the end of their stay in the school, far from being a burden on society, they are able to take their place in society as useful contributing members.

General Manager, Hilton Colombo, Jerome Auvity said “we adopted this institution as our CSR partner in 2007 in-conjunction with our 21st anniversary. We continue to be committed to support the welfare and wellbeing of these children. With our previous funds we have purchased custom made cupboards for storing brail typewriters and blackboards. We have also completed the kitchen unit and one hostel with funds raised during our 21st anniversary.
