Hilton Croydon Supports Youth At Inspiring Student Open Day With Hilton Worldwide And Believe In Young People As Part Of Bright Blue Futures

CROYDON, UK - Hilton Croydon participated in an Inspiring Student Open Day with Hilton Worldwide and Believe in Young People (BiYP) on February 5, 2015 to support the youth in Croydon. To provide for the growing need of formative work experience, apprenticeships and career opportunities on offer with Hilton for local young people, community partners and local schools have joined efforts to organize the Inspiring Student Open Day with Hilton Worldwide and Believe in Young People as part of a wider National Programme to develop and prepare young people for future employment, including apprenticeships in hospitality.

The event included a special visit from the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Manju ShahulHameed, who said, "I am delighted I attended the event and showed my support for the impact Hilton's partnership with BiYP is having on the local community as well as across the UK. This approach to connecting local employers with education to help young people with their transition into employment, is an example of our commitment to supporting quality and sustained youth employment through structured work experience and apprenticeships."

Hilton Croydon's participation in the Inspiring Student Open Day with Hilton Worldwide and Believe in Young People is part of its support of a global community relations initiative by Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Bright Blue Futures, designed to help young people achieve stability through the delivery of basic needs such as food, shelter and hope through education, life skills development, training and employment. As the flagship brand of Hilton, Hilton Hotels & Resorts is contributing to the company's broader goal of creating opportunities for young people by engaging 144,000 team members across communities in this brand-wide effort.

"The Inspiring Student Open Day with Hilton Worldwide and Believe in Young People, was established to support the growth and development of youth in our community," said David Rowley, general manager, Hilton Croydon. "This is a challenge we face globally, and at Hilton Croydon, we see this as an opportunity to provide the resources we have available at our hotel to help young people reach their full potential."

Launching this year, the Hilton/BiYP open days will give students in and around Croydon thechance to meet with Hilton and BiYP and find out more about the work experience, apprenticeships and employment opportunities available, and how to best go about pursuing a career in hospitality. Last academic year, 78 percent of students who completed a structured work experience at a Hilton hotel, through the BiYP programme, were marked as suitable future apprentices by Hilton.

Tanja Kuveljic, CEO, BiYP, said, "These open days are an important part of BiYP's employer-led programme, which includes career information, advice and guidance, school visits and workshops, work-related lessons and structured work experience placements to help young people develop and progress into suitable future careers with industry-leading employers including Hilton. Working with school, college and employer partners, BiYP is helping all young people including those who are at-risk from dropping out of education, training or employment whilst also helping them to make informed career decisions. We are determined to make future youth unemployment a thing of the past."

Youth are the next generation of leaders, innovators, employees and world travelers, comprising approximately one quarter of the world's population1. Approximately 200 million youth worldwide live in poverty2 and an estimated 75 million youth are unemployed3. The travel and tourism sector employs 255 million people around the world, and by the year 2022, an estimated 73 million new travel and tourism jobs will be created, providing ample opportunities for today's youth as they enter the workforce in the hospitality industry4. Hilton Croydon's team members believe they can make a difference in the future of Croydon's youth through their ongoing commitment to 'Believe In Young People'.

According to the International Youth Foundation, there are few industries whose resources, expertise and career pathways are as relevant to addressing the challenges facing young people today, and whose businesses and expansion relies as heavily on a trained workforce in every region of the world. In 2012, a white paper was authored by the International Youth Foundation to highlight economic and social challenges that face the world's youth, and the key issues in need of solutions. The report, Creating Opportunities for Youth in Hospitality, was unveiled at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January.
