Hilton Guam Resort & Spa Plays Host To First Ever ITF Futures Tennis Event In Guam
Players Participate In Guam Futures For Cash And World Ranking Points
June 07, 2010
TUMON, Guam - A tiny island in the Pacific made strides in the international professional tennis arena by hosting its first ever ITF Futures event, which was held at Hilton Guam Resort & Spa.
For about a week and a half, dozens of young, upcoming tennis players and fairly established netters from around the world pounded the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa’s five hard courts in the 2010 Guam Futures qualifiers and main draw in both singles and doubles. In then end, it was Japan’s Tatsuma Ito who took home the first ever Guam Futures champion trophy with a convincing 6-2, 6-4 win over compatriot Junn Mitsuhashi. Ito never dropped a set and gave up only 20 games in five matches en route to his singles championship win. At the time of registration, Ito was ranked No. 251 in the world, while Mitsuhashi was ranked No. 445. Ito, who recently married, dedicated his first Futures win as a married man to his wife, who was in the stands during all his matches.
In doubles, the Japanese pair of Tasuku Iwami and Toshihide Matsui took home the doubles crown with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 squeaker over the United States team of Ruben Gonzales and Christian Guevara. At the time of registration, the Iwami/Matsui tandem was ranked No. 941 in the world in doubles. The Gonzales/Guevara duo was ranked No. 1,524 in the world in doubles. In singles, Iwami was ranked No. 692 and Matsui was ranked No. 675. Gonzales was No. 939 in the world, while partner Guevara was ranked No. 1,137 in the world.
Trophies awarded to the winners and runners up were made from treated and lacquered local ifit wood to differentiate the tournament awards from trophies of hundreds of other Futures events held around the world.
In addition to the players from Japan and the United States, netters from Australia, Canada, Germany, Korea, Northern Mariana Islands, Solomon Islands and Taiwan took to the Futures stage. Three local players also participated – Adam Rudolph and Marten Lai in the qualifiers, and Justin Dugan as the lone local wild card in the main draw.
The $10,000 Futures event was put together as a result of the collaborative efforts of the Guam National Tennis Federation and the Japan Tennis Association, in conjunction with Guam Visitors Bureau, Continental Airlines and Hilton Guam Resort & Spa as title sponsors. The Guam tournament was one leg in the mid-year Japan Futures series. Next stops in the series included Futures tournaments in Karuizawa, Kusatsu, Tokyo, and Sapporo.
