Hilton Hotels Across Middle East And Africa Power Earth Hour 2009
Lights out at 40 Hilton Family hotels across 12 countries
March 19, 2009
DUBAI, UAE - Hilton Hotels Corporation in Middle East & Africa today announced its participation in the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature's global Earth Hour initiative for the second consecutive year. All 40 hotels across 12 countries will switch off non-essential lighting on March 28th 2009 at 8.30pm (local time) for one hour.
Initiated in Australia in 2007, WWF Earth Hour is a global campaign created to underscore the connection between energy usage and climate change, with the aim to reach out to more than one billion people, including individuals, businesses and governments.
Andy Ridley, Global Director of Earth Hour for the WWF said, "The business community has an incredible ability and responsibility to engage employees, customers and suppliers to create a sustainable future for our planet, and we therefore welcome the involvement of major international businesses such as Hilton in Earth Hour."
In the Middle East & Africa, Hilton's support of Earth Hour will involve a wide range of activities in the 40 hotels across the U.A.E, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Mauritius, Seychelles, Egypt, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Cameroon and South Africa such as:
- Switching off main building exterior lighting and rooftop neon signage
- Encouraging guests to switch off their room lights
- Minimal lighting in guest corridors, lobbies, restaurants, bars, back of house and retail outlets (in line with safety guidelines)
- Hosting candle-lit dinners in hotel restaurants and bars
- Team member information and sensitivity
Jean-Paul Herzog, President, Hilton Hotels Corporation, Middle East & Africa said, "We are delighted to participate in WWF's Earth Hour for the second consecutive year. This action truly reflects our enduring commitment to the cause of energy conservation and environmental preservation. Earth Hour presents us with an opportunity to interact and involve our guests and team members in a very simple yet impactful campaign, simultaneously improving our efficiencies and environmental practices whilst re-iterating our commitment to the local community."
Hilton has fully embraced Earth Hour across Middle East & Africa, with some hotels declaring their own monthly Earth Hour as part of their ongoing environmental sustainability programmes.
Other environmental measures taken by Hilton worldwide including Middle East & Africa is a water conservation programme, ‘Conserve to Preserve.' By asking guests when they would like their sheets and towels changed, over 12 million gallons of fresh water are saved per month. Furthermore, Hilton has implemented a corporate-wide energy efficient lighting retrofit programme for guestrooms. By using state-of-the-art compact fluorescent and other lighting technology, Hilton provides an environment that guests desire, while significantly reducing the use of natural resources that are utilised to power products.
Globally, Hilton is one of the founding members of the International Tourism Partnership www.tourismpartnership.org. This organisation is designed to bring together the leaders of some of the largest travel and tourism companies, to work through collective, industry-wide action at local, destination and country level to encourage real progress towards a more sustainable hotel, travel and tourism industry.
The support of Earth Hour by Hilton Hotels Corporation in Middle East & Africa is in addition to support given by the hotel company in Asia, Europe and the US.
