TAUPO, New Zealand - Fifteen pieces of valuable and rare Zimbabwean sculptures have found their home at Hilton Lake Taupo.

Made from stones such as butterjade, cobalt, opalstone, verdite and leopard rock, Zimbabwean sculptures at Hilton Lake Taupo have arrived from the Birdwoods Gallery in Havelock North, Hawke's Bay.

Birdwoods Gallery's founders Bruce and Louise Stobart source their stones from The Great Dyke, a 310-mile ridge of 2.5 billion-year-old hills laced with chrome, platinum, gold, copper, emeralds and other precious metals that form the backbone of Zimbabwe.

Due to the geological age and components of these stones, Zimbabwean sculpture has become the international choice of most collected African art. It also showcases in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Rodin Museum, plus the residences of the Rockefellers, the Prince of Wales and Sir Richard Attenborough.

From today, visitors can appreciate some of these valuable pieces when traveling to Taupo and stopping over at Hilton Lake Taupo.

"We are very proud to have these meaningful pieces of art showcased in our hotel" - comments hotel manager Clinton Farley. "Hilton Lake Taupo is all about highlighting the best of what our region and the Central North Island has to offer, including crafts and sculptures that have travelled so far to find a home in our hotel. We invite all New Zealanders and international tourists to visit the hotel and contemplate the art in house".

This is not the first art initiative undertaken by the hotel. Hilton Lake Taupo has been exhibiting a selection of art pieces by Art.co since 2010. Art.co is an economic development incentive for artists throughout New Zealand and is based in Taupo. For them Hilton Lake Taupo is the best venue for the annual exhibition "Original Art Expo", which showcases some of the regions' finest works.

Hotel guests have the opportunity to purchase the art exhibited at Hilton Lake Taupo. Simply express your interest to our concierge for assistance. Zimbabwean sculptures are on exhibition in the hotel until 31 May 2013.
