ODAWARA, Kanagawa, Japan - Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa is pleased to announce that its major renovation project, currently under way, will deliver 173 modern guest rooms as well as extensive updates to the hotel restaurant, front lobby and Sky Banquets by the end of March 2015. As of the end of 2014, 119 rooms had already been completed.

Located within easy access by car or Shinkansen (about 80 kilometers) from Tokyo, Odawara is nestled among the foothills of the Hakone Mountains facing Sagami Bay. The area was once one of the most significant rest areas offering hatago (lodgings) for travelers along the historic Tokaido, a coastal route that ran from Edo (now present-day Tokyo) to Kyoto.

"Hilton has operated more than 50 years of history in Japan and has always stood for the very best in service, comfort and innovation," says Andreas Boettger, general manager, Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa. "Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa's renovation project demonstrates our deep commitment to set the highest benchmark for hospitality, continually evolving to meet the needs of our guests. I truly look forward to welcoming our guests to new venues and facilities very soon."

Inspired by this unique heritage, Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa evokes a modern-day interpretation of classic hatago hospitality dedicated to those seeking a get-away-from-it-all resort experience, complete with a wide range of services and activities from traditional hot springs and soothing spa treatments to restaurants and impressive sporting facilities.

The newly renovated guest rooms incorporate distinctive modern, Japanese design elements drawn from Odawara's rich history, culture and nature. For instance, the quintessential traditional Odawara lantern, with its unusual independent 'ribs' that enable folding for easy storage and convenience for travelers, is now a feature in all newly renovated guest rooms in the form of an elegant, welcoming lamp, incorporating the Odawara lantern motif.

Black pine trees from the local area (including a particularly famous collection from inside Odawara Castle) also add a touch of local flavor to the new design. Depicted in silhouette on the wall above the bed, they symbolize the Japanese appreciation of the simple and modest in art. Here, the trees are beautifully offset by the guest bed headboard, decorated in a subtle soft blue-purple tone inspired by the natural beauty of Sagami Bay and the sky. The color purple has long been considered royal in Japanese culture.

The Japanese custom of sitting and sleeping on the floor has also been translated into the new standard guest rooms. The Hilton Superior Twin Room features a classic low platform upon which up to three mattresses may be placed. The platform doubles as the perfect seating from which to enjoy floor-to-ceiling panoramic views over the Odawara countryside. To complete the authentic scene, the expansive windows feature pleated screens referencing traditional Sudare screens.

The Japanese Western Room similarly offers guests an experience of traditional Japanese and local Odawara elements. With a separate Japanese room featuring woven tatami mats and a western-style bedroom, the standard room accommodates up to 5 people while a suite is ideal for families and groups up to 6 guests.
