JAYA, Malaysia - Junior chefs of Hilton Petaling Jaya proved their mettle in the kitchen by winning six medals at the recent IKIP Culinaire Challenge 2009 held at Kuantan, Pahang. The following chefs from Hilton Petaling Jaya were triumphant winners for gold and silver in various categories:
• GOLD MEDAL - Chef Mastura Abdul Aziz - Wedding Cake Display
• GOLD MEDAL - Chef Norizan Mohamed Zawawi - Live Fruit & Vegetables Carving
• GOLD MEDAL - Chef See Fatt Leong - Live Cooking Meat / Poultry/ Game
• SILVER MEDAL - Chef Aysraf Othman - Live Cooking Meat/ Poultry / Game
• SILVER MEDAL - Chef Aysraf Othman - Live Cooking Fish/ Seafood
• SILVER MEDAL - Chef Norizan Mohamed Zawawi - Fruit & Vegetables Display
Twenty-nine year old Chef Mastura Abdul Aziz from the pastry kitchen attested that the gold medal she won in the Wedding Cake Display category was no beginner’s luck but lots of hard work. A first timer in culinary challenge, she spent many late nights before the competition on preparation works. Her winning piece, a 3-tier wedding cake aptly themed “A Princess Dream”, was entirely hand decorated and edible.
“I was stunned when the judges announced the result since this is my first attempt in a competition. It has given me a great opportunity to expand my horizon. I learnt a lot from other contestants. I will definitely participate in more competitions in the near future to sharpen my skills,” said Chef Mastura.
From the Malay Kitchen, the more seasoned Chef Norizan Mohamed Zawawi bagged two medals. Chef Norizan prides herself for winning six out of the eight competitions she participated in the past. Her showcase piece entitled “Fantasy Garden”, won her a gold medal in Live Fruits & Vegetables Carving. A free-style carving, each participant was given a time limit of 120 minutes to finish his or her display. Chef Norizan was the only female out of the eleven participants. She also won the silver medal for Fruit & Vegetables Carving Display.
Chef Norizan said, “I enjoyed participating in competition because it gives me the adrenaline rush. Although I specialize in Malay cooking, I always have a keen interest in carving as it requires a lot of patient and skills.”
On the other hand, Chef See Fatt Leong from Uncle Chilli’s kitchen attributed his winning of a gold medal in Live Cooking Meat/ Poultry & Game to the guidance given by Chef Zul Carloz, the head chef of Uncle Chilli’s. For the competition, Chef See was required to prepare one main course for four persons within one hour. His winning dish was Braised Beef Cheek and Oven Bake Lamb Rum. Chef Aysraf Othman from Genji Japanese Restaurant also credited his achievement of two silver medals to his head chef, Richard Teoh.
The Pahang Skills Development Institute organized IKIP Culinary Challenge 2009 for the second year. There were 10 categories in the challenge covering cake and bread making, fruit and vegetable carving, meat and poultry dishes, seafood, dessert, table-setting, waiter race and buffet showpiece. The competition drew the participation of 119 chefs aged between 80 and 30 years. The event was graced by the wife of the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Puan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandarin Sultan Iskandar, who is well known in the culinary scene.
