SANYA, China -  Hilton Sanya Resort and Spa, the first Hilton Worldwide Resort in China recently held its fourth "Talent Class" opening ceremony. 78 out of 230 outstanding students from Hainan University Sanya College’s Tourism faculty were selected for Hilton Sanya’s latest “Talent Class” for this year. The opening ceremony saw attendance from the hotel management team as well as representatives from Hainan University Sanya College.

Mr. Jean-Pierre Mainardi, General Manager of Hilton Sanya Resort & Spa said the hotel’s collaboration with Hainan University Sanya College is a “win-win-win” model for the hotel, college and hospitality industry alike. Through this collaboration, the college boosts enrolment for its tourism faculty, while the hotel will have no lack of talented and capable staff. The students find themselves assured of employment after graduation, allowing them to confidently map out their future career paths.

Established in 2005, the “Hilton Talent Class” is an initiative by Hilton Sanya & Spa presided over by General Manager Mr. Dirk De Cuyper and Director of Human Resources Ms. Jenny Chen, with aims to lower the region’s unemployment rate through offering stable job opportunities to college graduates.

The class’s creative and dynamic syllabus takes into consideration the demands of the hotel industry to ensure that all graduates have the capability to be adequately equipped with the relevant skills to succeed in this burgeoning industry.

For instance, other than offering students a flexible curriculum to reflect the rapid changes in the hospitality and tourism industry, the programme also affords students internship opportunities at leading hotels to enable them to apply classroom knowledge to the real working environment, thereby enriching their experience and familiarizing them with the workings of the industry at an early stage.

After the completion of the course, graduates will be assessed for their suitability for entry-level management positions within a 24-month service period in Hilton Sanya (equivalent to supervisor level). Subsequently after working in the hotel for 24 months (one batch requires 37 months), the hotel will reimburse a portion of their student fees (between RMB 6,000 and RMB7,000).

Ms. Jenny Chen, Director of Human Resources for Hilton Sanya Resort & Spa is strongly supportive of this programme and called the graduates from the “Hilton Talent Class” a “windfall of talent”.

“Talented individuals are gradually becoming scarce in Hainan Island as more top-end luxury hotels are set up on the international tourist attraction, providing even greater competition between hotels to recruit the best people,” she said.

In many instances, graduates of the “Hilton Talent Class” have gone on to become capable executives in many hotel departments, and some have already moved on into Supervisor and Captain roles.

Mr. Wang XunMing, deputy president of Sanya College of Hainan University, said: “This initiative will solve internship and employment problems of students. It also gives them excellent hands-on practice, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience, which will enable them to develop their potential to their fullest.”
Towards the end of the ceremony, Gao Zhixiang, one of the students from the “Hilton Talent Class” gave a speech on behalf of all students, where she expressed appreciation to both the hotel and college for providing such a great opportunity to students to further their aspirations in the hospitality industry.
