Washington, DC -  Hilton Washington has fully engaged in a landmark $140 million restoration project, set for completion in 2010. The monumental transformation of the legendary 1,070-room property, which opened in 1965, includes a top-to-bottom makeover of all guestrooms, public areas, lobby, health club, restaurants, meeting rooms and function space. Situated on several acres on upper Connecticut Avenue near Dupont Circle, Hilton Washington’s 110,000 square feet of event space has been the site of prestigious gatherings hosted by U.S. presidents, foreign dignitaries, celebrities and business leaders. The restoration efforts will highlight the hotel’s historic mid-century modern style – and irreplaceable existing features and amenities – while introducing fresh, functional and timeless décor.

Classic Style Meets Contemporary Attitude
From circular sofas to oversized light fixtures as art elements, many new aspects of the hotel will have a sleek update on mid-20th century designs. Plush, new blue-toned carpets will embrace the lobby and public spaces. Rich espresso woods will contrast with creams and crisp whites. Dark jewel tones will envelope cozy new couches accented with pops of plum, lime, saffron and brushed steel.

Once complete, the main lobby will open up into unique gathering places – among them a new, full-service gourmet coffee outlet located near the Front Desk and main hotel entrance, complete with expanded food offerings for busy travelers on the go. A re-configured lounge area and bar, also on the Lobby Level, will invoke the new modern styles with more intimate seating and large communal tables for group gatherings. Leisure travelers and group attendees will also enjoy expanded seating areas at the lobby Front Desk, complete elevator modernization and integrated, state-of-the-art technology in directories and way-finding signage throughout the hotel.

New Meeting and Function Space
Conveniently located on the Lobby Level, an impressive new meeting center is being added, offering a unique setting of nine dedicated meeting rooms. Designed to provide an exceptional distraction-free learning environment, the meeting center will combine state-of-the-art technology with the latest audio-visual needs. Inside the meeting rooms, attendees will have access to electronic black out shades, recessed electronic projection screens, tackable walls, mounted boards and stone-top credenzas with safes for secure storage. An enlarged corridor outside the meeting rooms will have an expansive bay of windows overlooking a new outdoor garden, and access points to the accompanying outdoor patio for networking and group events. The corridor will also have an exclusive central refreshment area for the meeting center, and computer “touchdown” areas with easy access to power and internet connections for laptops.

One floor below, on the Terrace Level, Hilton Washington’s restoration project includes a new 30,000 square foot multi-purpose space which will serve many groups’ needs through an extensive network of moveable walls – from exhibit hall to a series of meeting spaces ranging in size from 900 to 7,800 square feet. The expansive Hall, which will have 15-foot ceilings in the central 7,800 square-foot area, and 11-foot ceilings along the outer perimeter, will have the flexibility to change quickly from meetings and exhibition space to social setups.

A series of existing conference suites located adjacent to the new multi-purpose Hall will be significantly modified to each double in size and have a main entry point from an enlarged Terrace Meeting Suites Corridor. These “super suite” rooms will also have a secondary entrance to provide direct access to the new Hall, allowing the meeting rooms and multi-purpose Hall to be used together or exclusive from one another. Toward the end of the Terrace Meeting Suites Corridor, a large new guest stairway will give attendees easy access the new lobby-level meeting center as an alternate option to the existing mid-corridor elevator, and the elevators, escalators and stairs located near the Terrace Lobby. Additionally, four new elevators will be added to the existing two currently servicing the Terrace Level from the main lobby and guest room floors.

Located off the hotel’s T Street entrance, the Terrace Level Lobby will be redesigned to encompass the hotel’s new contemporary look. The area serves as the dedicated entrance for local social events with its own separate covered drive, and will also be the main entry point to the new Hall. The expansive International Terrace, situated behind the Terrace Lobby will also receive a makeover, with additional restrooms, an enlarged coat check area and grand entry points to the International Ballroom, located on the Concourse Level.

Updated Ballroom and Concourse Level
Located one floor below the Terrace Level, sits Hilton Washington’s crown jewel – its iconic 36,000 square foot International Ballroom complex – one of the largest ballrooms on the east coast to provide column-free visibility. As the site of such prestigious events as the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the First Lady’s Luncheon and the National Prayer Breakfast, the updated ballroom can accommodate 4,200 for a reception and nearly 3,000 for a seated dinner. Recently, more than a $600,000 was spent on new carpeting, wall sconces, fixtures, painting and the installation of special Whisperwall® Acoustical fabric panels to improve audio quality inside the ballroom.

All aspects of the Concourse Level outside the Ballroom will be redesigned, including a fresh look for the Concourse Foyer, Crystal Corridor and Crystal meeting rooms. An expanded space will be provided for group registration, and an enlarged women’s restroom will be created, as well as the addition of new men’s and women’s restrooms at the far end of the Crystal Corridor.

Redesigned Guestrooms and Executive Lounge
Moving up to the hotel’s top 10 floors – all 1,070 guest rooms and suites will be renovated top-to-bottom, wall-to-wall with rich dark woods, textured ivory wall coverings, crisp white linens and accents of blue and lime. Guests will enjoy panoramic views of the Washington DC skyline, and an enlarged room size thanks to the removal of fan coil units originally placed under the window. New individually-controlled “on-demand” heating and cooling units will be installed in each room, allowing guests to set the temperature to their desire. An enlarged bathroom with a sliding pocket door will feature a granite bath and counter, Kohler faucet and built-in shelving. The modernization will also include a new 32-inch flat-panel HDTV, laptop-size in-room safe, enlarged work station, swanky ergonomic desk chair and plenty of desk-level outlets, as well as the Hilton Serenity bed, coffee maker, iron and iron board, high speed Internet access, cable television with pay-per-view movies, and two dual line telephones with voicemail.

The Executive Lounge and concierge desk will also be completely renovated to include a comfortable relaxation area with more work stations and larger desk areas.
