Hilton Woodcliff Lake Joins U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Wastewise Partner Program and Expands Its Eco-Friendly Strategy
April 18, 2012
WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. - Hilton Woodcliff Lake, a premium hotel located in Bergen County, NJ, today announced joining the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise Partner Program as part of a continuing strategy to reduce it's global footprint. In connection with this announcement, the hotel also unveiled that its guest room renovation project, currently underway, would incorporate several new eco-friendly improvements including the installation of high-efficiency PTAC heating/air conditioning units in guest rooms. Guest room temperatures will be set at 60 degrees during the winter months and 75 degrees during the summer. In addition, the exterior of the hotel is in the process of being resealed to further insulate the building and make it more energy efficient.
"Hilton was the first major multi-brand company in the hospitality industry to make sustainability a brand standard," said Maurice Alfaro, assistant general manager, Hilton Woodcliff Lake. "Expanding our hotel's role in that effort is paramount in every new venture we undertake from changing a light bulb to the major construction project currently inprogress."
As a member of the Hilton Hotels & Resorts portfolio, Hilton Woodcliff Lake utilizes "LightStay" a proprietary system that analyzes and reports sustainability performance. As a result, many eco-friendly initiatives are being implemented in the areas of conservation, waste reduction, resource conservation, and energy efficiency in the hotel's daily operations. In late 2011, Hilton Woodcliff Lake took advantage of the opportunity to partner with the borough on the Biodiesel Fuel project turning waste vegetable oil from the hotel into biodiesel fuel to be used in running the town's DPW trucks.
Hilton Woodcliff Lake gives all guests the option to take advantage of the "eco card" left in each guest room. By simply leaving the card on their bed, guests instruct housekeepers to change bed linens every three days rather than daily. This same policy is applied to terry towels being changed in the bathrooms.
Food waste from the kitchen is being composted and re-used for fertilizer on the hotel grounds. Newspapers, paper, plastic and bottles are sorted to facilitate solid waste recycling. Additionally, a new program was established to recycle batteries and light bulbs. Throughout the hotel, the use of environmentally safe cleansing products is standard operating procedure.
Paper products made from fully recyclable sugar cane, one of the most eco-friendly, sustainable and renewable resources, have replaced Styrofoam cups and plates, once used in the hotel's food outlets. Management's commitment to conservation is also evident in its transition to a paperless check-in and an internal shift from paper to electronic communication.
Several new programs advancing energy efficiency have been instituted. Energy efficient bulbs are now standard in every guest room, public space and corridor. The efficiency of the building's nineteen roof top air conditioning units was significantly improved by the addition of computer software to regulate and monitor the area's climate control in the hotel's 27 meeting rooms and large public space. All storage rooms and closets have been fitted with lighting shut-off sensors. In the hotel's kitchen, exhaust fans were retrofitted with time clocks that shut the system from midnight until 5am, saving 140 hours a month of energy usage. The one time in-house laundry is now outsourced, reducing gas emissions and saving sizeable amounts of water, gas and electricity. Moreover, with the elimination of the in-house laundry facility, it is no longer necessary to heat and store large amounts of water for extended periods of time, thereby saving even more energy. In addition, the hotel now requires that any newly submitted contracted projects contain a 'green' option.
As part of the brand's mission to become the industry leader in sustainability, the company encourages support and respect for each of its property's unique local heritage and culture. To that end, Hilton Woodcliff Lake recently introduced the "Globally Inspired, Locally Grown" menu to its Saffron restaurant, celebrating northern New Jersey's rich history of farming and its many ethnicities. The hotel's culinary team crafts dishes using locally sourced produce and products from nearby farms. As further commitment to this particular environmental initiative, the property has plans to use its expansive grounds to establish its very own garden this season, growing herbs and produce for use in its signature menus.
