BIRMINGHAM, UK -  Birmingham's key conference hotel, the largest in the UK outside of London, is completing a multi-million pound refurbishment, building on the city's development as a destination having attracted an extra 1.5m annual visitors in 2007*.

Hilton Birmingham Metropole, adjacent to the NEC and Birmingham International Airport, is completing a £12 million renovation which has seen more than 500 of its 790 bedrooms refurbished in the past three years and its meetings and conference space given a complete facelift.

One of three 'Metropole' hotels in Hilton's UK & Ireland portfolio the property opened in 1975 and has played host to some of the region's most celebrated events including Crufts and Horse of the Year, Clothes Show and the BBC Good Food Show.

Patrick Stapleton has recently been appointed as general manager of the hotel, having previously overseen Hilton's two Northern Ireland properties, Hilton Belfast and Hilton Templepatrick.

He said: "Since it first opened the hotel has been a vital element of Birmingham's business and leisure offer - the refurbishment has ensured the hotel maintains a level of quality our guests have come to rely on.

"The region has recently enjoyed something of a renaissance and the investment in the hotel highlights our commitment to that development.

"Many people from the Midlands and beyond will have visited us for an event or to stay before they fly out of the airport - we'd invite them to come again and see the changes we've made."

Figures released earlier this year by Marketing Birmingham showed that 31.9m people visited Birmingham in 2007 for leisure, spending £4.4bn. Refurbishment work at the hotel included a £1.75m spend on the hotel's executive lounge and executive bedrooms - a key feature of many Hilton hotels around the world. The largest focus was the remaining bedrooms which have received in excess of £7m.

The hotel's many features include two restaurants, a 24-hour lounge, gastropub, business centre, shopping centre and leisure facilities with a spa and 20m x 20m swimming pool.

With 33 meeting and conference rooms the hotel is able to up to 2000 people at any one event.

Room rates start from £58 with delegate rates from £45. Bookings can be made by calling 0121 780 4242 or on www.hilton.co.uk/birminghammet.
