Soccer Fever Hits Hilton Colombo!
July 07, 2010
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Hilton Colombo, together with the Football Federation, gave all Football lovers an experience of the "Ultimate Soccer Sensation." Football fans gathered in the evenings at the "Soccer Stadium" the hotel constructed and those who wanted to be a part of this spectacular game. The atmosphere was electrifying. The Il Ponte/Poolside was transformed into a soccer stadium for one month. The lineup not only included activities for Colombo's sports lovers - there were also something for everyone to enjoy.
A South African jazz band flew in especially for the event and played typical South African afro-jazz and popular Kwaito music, which is incredibly diverse, articulate and glowingly expressive. Patrons watched the matches live on a super-huge video wall in addition to other monitors around the open air "soccer field".
"The FIFA World Cup is the most anticipated sporting event in the world with billions glued to the television sets when the games are on and we were immensely happy that we made it a special event at Hilton Colombo and proud that its was a huge success", said the hotel's General Manager Jerome Auvity. "We gave a different kind of an experience to Sri Lankans with Soccer World Cup even though their favourite sport is cricket" added Auvity. Executive Chef Rohan Fernandopulle and his kitchen team prepared an extensive range of South African delicacies for the occasion, such as Boerewors Rolls with Braised Onions, Biltong, Corn on the Cob and more, along with everyone's favourites like hot dogs, burgers and fries! Beverages were too, imported from the host country.
The weekly draw was also something that guests anticipated, which featured a chance to win airline tickets to South Africa and Thailand, complimentary hotel vouchers, a stay in the Presidential Suite (including Sunday Brunch for two) and restaurant meal vouchers. The game was not be restricted to the screen as football lovers joined in the "guessing pool" and won free drinks.
Hilton Colombo also arranged shower facilities for the first live matches that started at 7.30 p.m. local time for guests who arrived straight after work and refreshed themselves with a shower whilst the Il Ponte team prepared a table for their viewing pleasure.
The event was supported by The South African High Commission, Coca Cola, Mobitel, Red Bull, Carlsberg, Thai Airways, Dimo, ARTV, Real Radio, LICC Jeans, Visa, Colombo Jewellery Stores, HNB, Alpha Orient, and Abans.
