A Dinner For The Elderly
March 04, 2011
Everything began the first week of December. Our general manager received a phone call from the major of the city, who told him he would love Hilton Colon Guayaquil support for one of his Christmas’ initiatives on the 28th, to warm up the heart of the poor elderly in this special season.
We had been planning this big occasion and finally, the day came. That morning I wore the most comfortable shoes I could find. Why? Because we had to serve almost 4,000 people, spread out in 972 meters… like 10 blocks… imagine!
Of course our whole team included 300 waiters, even though not everybody was a real waiter. Our food service consisted of 1.5 tons of turkey, 900 kilos of rice and 500 kilos of ham. As it was a charity activity, people from different areas of the hotel wanted to help. That was one of the most exciting things in that afternoon, to see our executives and secretaries trying to hold a tray, to carry a lot of glasses and to do the right thing when serving a table, which they did not really know how to do.
Around 17h00, we took a bus from the Hotel to Main Street, the place where the event was going to happen. The traffic was slow. There was an enormous line of tables in the middle of the street. Worried about not being able to arrive on time, I decided to leave the bus and walked with other team members; after 10 minutes we got to the place. We began to set up the tables. Around 18h00, a lot of sweet ancients appeared and started to sit. After that, we never stopped running back and forth to bring them dinner and drinks, until the event finished around 21h00. Some made very nice comments such as: this turkey is great! I had not seen a piece of turkey in million years.
Everybody was enjoying the night. We finished about 20h30. It was a great Hilton experience, full of Blue Energy!
